VYPE: What are your goals and expectations for this season?
Jonah Link: My main goal for this year is to place decently at state. For the past few years, I have been having unfortunate draws at state. Hopefully, this year, I can have a good draw and place.
VYPE: How did you feel about your finish last year?
JL: I was disappointed in my finish last year, as I think I could have placed in the top 8 if I had played better.
VYPE: What are some things you worked on during the offseason to sharpen your game?
JL: Over the summer and offseason, I have worked on my backhand as much as possible, which has helped sharpen my game.
VYPE: What’s your favorite color?
JL: My favorite color is blue.
VYPE: I know chess has been a pastime for you. Have you played in any tournaments lately?
JL: Chess was a big part of my life last year, but I have set it aside to focus on school and tennis this year. I hope to continue playing chess tournaments during the summer.
VYPE: What are the similarities between chess and tennis?
JL: The similarities between chess and tennis are all mental; you have to be focused every single moment of both games.
VYPE: Which teammate, past or present, has had the greatest impact on you and why?
JL: Jacob Kuehn was the teammate who impacted me most significantly throughout the years. He was the first person I played at practice, giving me the worst loss I think I’ve ever had. After this loss and throughout the years he gave me the motivation to get better.
VYPE: What’s a piece of advice you received from a coach/teacher that you won’t forget?
JL: The piece of advice that has changed my life and I will never forget was from Phil Barnes, when in 7th grade, he told me I needed to lose some weight to compete at a high level. This led me to lose close to 40-50 pounds and be much healthier.
VYPE: What’s one thing everybody should know about Jonah Link?
JL: Everyone should know that I am a Christian and hope everyone can find peace in life, whichever way they believe.
VYPE: What are your future plans?
JL: My future plans are to attend Tulsa University, and attend law school following.
