Duncan’s Blayden Harper – Athlete Spotlight – Presented by Taco Tico

For Duncan High School senior Blayden Harper, football is more than just a game, it is a foundation built on discipline, family and perseverance.

Harper, a varsity outside linebacker, credits much of his drive and character to his father. “My dad inspires me,” Harper said. “He has turned me into the man I am today by always teaching me things and pushing me to be the best version of myself.”

That mindset has helped Harper develop into a key contributor for the Demons. Known for his physicality and awareness on defense, he embraces the challenges that come with his position. Reading opposing offenses is no easy task. “The most difficult thing about playing outside linebacker is reading play-action plays,” Harper said.

Despite the mental demands of the game, Harper finds joy in the camaraderie that comes with being part of the team. “What I enjoy most about being a member of the football team is getting to do it with my brothers,” he said.

That bond extends beyond the field and fuels the team’s collective accountability. “We’re all in it together,” Harper said. “If I mess up, then that can mess everyone up. We each have a job and have to execute that job.”

Harper’s favorite football memory reflects both his skill and connection with teammates. He recalls a standout moment when he made a big defensive play. “My favorite memory from a game is getting an interception and celebrating with Boston White,” he said.

Off the field, Harper maintains balance by focusing on family and personal interests. He enjoys fishing and spending time with loved ones, a routine that helps him stay grounded during the demands of the season.

In the classroom, Harper favors history and cites Coach Kelly as his favorite teacher, showing his appreciation for mentors who influence him both academically and athletically.

Harper has also learned lasting lessons through sports that he plans to carry into the future. “Athletics have taught me to never quit when things are tough,” he said. “Even when you are in pain and uncomfortable, you have to keep pushing.”

His preparation before games reflects that same intensity. To get mentally ready, Harper turns to music. “In pregame, I always listen to the Beastie Boys to get fired up,” he said.

While the game itself can bring unpredictable moments — including what Harper describes as “Coach Terry’s celebrations” as the craziest thing he has seen on the field his focus remains steady.

As he enters his senior season, Harper continues to lead by example, combining determination, teamwork and resilience. For Duncan High School, he represents the kind of athlete who not only competes at a high level but also embodies the values of the program.
