QUICK HITS:

The Demons open the season against Lawton. It’s the first time the schools have squared off since 1987. Lawton won that contest 27-0. To say it has been awhile since Duncan and Tulsa Central have met in football is an understatement. The Demons travel to Tulsa for the first time since 1967 when they beat the Braves 6-0. Duncan has made the playoffs in back to back seasons after missing out from 2012 to 2017. The Demons last playoff win was a 45-7 drubbing of Ada in the 2011 Class 5A first round.

OFFENSE

Significant rebuilding must be done on offense with the graduation of speedsters Jai’vion Dangerfield and Roderick Standokes. Coach J.T. Cobble feels the offense will still be effective yet with a different look. “We have to replace a lot of speed so we will change up the scheme a little bit,” said the third year head coach. Tate Wilkins (6-0, 185, Sr.) has played a lot of football in a Demons’ uniform. Wilkins has played several offensive positions in his career but will land at quarterback in 2020. Desmond Pettit (5-11, 185, SR) will see more carries at running back. He rushed for 100 yards against Elgin and averaged around 8 yards per carry as a junior. Tyson Walker (6-2, 170, Sr.) returns at receiver after missing most of the 2019 season with a broken foot. Walker is athletic and can pull the ball down in traffic. Every team can use a smart, veteran offensive lineman and the Demons have that in center Zack Schreckengost (6-3, 245, Sr.). This will be Schreckengost’s third season to play the position and Cobble has seen his confidence balloon in the past year. Hunter Prince (5-11, 175, Sr.) is back at tight end. The rest of the offensive line must be developed around Schreckengost.

DEFENSE

The Demons are paced by Wilkins in the secondary and double-tough linebacker Chance Brooksher (6-3, 255, Sr.). Duncan is auditioning a few new faces for the defensive interior positions, especially at the all-important noseguard in their three-man front. Prince and Jackson Attaway (6-1, 180, Sr.) bring the pressure off the edge at end. As big, fast and physical as Brooksher is, he will need help keeping opposing lineman away from him. Wilkins’ smarts and instincts are just as integral to the defense in the secondary. He has great anticipation and is an all-around quality athlete. The sophomore class has quality talent and will provide a significant contribution to the efforts this fall. Cobble has increased participation in his tenure with the Demons. He’s 14-7 the past two years after a 3-7 introductory mark. The Demons will be hungry to compete in a district without a clear favorite and look to extend their run of two straight trips to the postseason
