Like many team sports, basketball is one that requires both individual effort and team
effort to be successful. For Junior Carson Carrio, basketball is his main sport at Duncan
High School. He plays point/shooting guard. Carrio has played basketball since he was
young and always tries to improve his game and skills. “I’ve grown up playing basketball
have always tried to push myself to get better at the game. My family has been a big part of
that as they are always supporting me,” Carrio said.
Carrio has been influenced by many athletes and coaches over the years, specifically Ben
Johnson and Braden Hill, whom he said were both “coaches that really helped him get going
with basketball and shaped a lot of who he is as an athlete and person.” At school, Carrio
said his teacher, Nolan Price, has had the biggest impact on his life because he “cares about
me as a person and always asks how I’m doing.” On his team, Carrio said Daveon Carr is a
player he enjoys working against because “he is a leader and always pushes me to be better
and is very competitive.”
For Carrio, it has taken a combination of things to be successful as a basketball player.
“Focus and communication are the biggest things to have success as a team.” At Duncan
High School, they’ve won tournaments here and there, which is always a great feeling!
Carrio also said there are a handful of rivals that he enjoys playing against. “We beat Altus
and that felt good to win. We play Lawton soon and that would be a great win for us
because it’s such a great rivalry!”
Carrio is involved in FCA at DHS in addition to basketball, so he has to have time
management between activities, homework, sports, family and home life. When asked how
he does it, Carrio responded, “I spend extra hours in the gym but once I’m home, I hang out
with my family and spend time with them. Prioritizing the right things is hard, but it’s
important to me to balance it all.”
