VYPE: What grade are you in and what sports do you play?

Ariyah: I am a senior at Duncan High School and I play basketball.

VYPE: What has it taken to be successful in your sports?

Ariyah: It’s taken a lot of time to get where I am right now. Not just from me, but from my family, too. My mom stays late with me at the gym to rebound. She also gave up time and money for me to play travel ball, which I’m very grateful for.

VYPE: What motivates you?

Ariyah: I would say my hatred of losing motivates me the most. I do love to win, but I hate to lose even more.

VYPE: Which teammate do you enjoy working against the most with in practice?

Ariyah: Dasia Givens. No matter which side of the ball you’re playing her on, if you don’t bring your best effort she’ll embarrass you. And that makes me better.

VYPE: Who are some of your biggest influences or role models?

Ariyah: My biggest role model is Serena Williams. I look up to her because no woman had ever been so great at what they did for so long before her.

VYPE: Is there an opponent that you enjoy beating the most?

Ariyah: Ardmore for sure. I was a little disappointed they weren’t on our schedule this year, but I’m glad to say we got the last laugh.

VYPE: What has been the highlight moment of your career?

Ariyah: I would say the highlight of my career would be making the Area Tournament last year. That hadn’t been done at Duncan High School in a while, so I was really proud of our team.

VYPE: What does it take to balance your school work and the activities you are involved in?

Ariyah: I think taking time to rest is important. Whatever I’m doing I tried to give 100%. Before I move onto the next thing, I make sure to give myself time to regroup.

VYPE: What clubs and campus activities are you involved with?

Ariyah: National Honor Society and the Career Pathways Program.
