With a competitive spirit and a heart rooted in faith, sophomore athlete Delayna Holthaus has become a rising star in both volleyball and soccer. Balancing two demanding sports, along with school and leadership activities, she’s learned the true value of discipline and teamwork. On the soccer field, Delayna plays center-mid, directing plays, staying composed under pressure, and setting the tone for her team.
“I feel like the thing that motivates me is knowing that I am playing for the glory and honor of God and not myself,” she says. “I also have a great team around me that makes me want to play my heart out for them.”
Her family plays a huge part in that motivation, especially her siblings who set powerful examples through their work ethic and perseverance.
“My biggest role models are my siblings because they always gave everything they had in every sport and never backed down when they were faced with challenges,” Delayna explains. “My parents also influence me by their hard work and constant dedication to our family no matter the situation.”
Among the teachers who have guided her, one stands out for her positivity and encouragement.
“She showed up every day with a good attitude and encouraged me to keep a good mindset because it can help others in multiple ways,” Delayna says of her former fifth-grade teacher, Mrs. Dana Lohrer.
Success for Delayna hasn’t been about shortcuts, it’s been earned through determination and consistency.
“It has taken hard work, focus, determination, coach-ability, perseverance, and many hours practicing on my own,” she says.
Her favorite memory so far came during her freshman year when she got to share the field with her older sister.
“The highlight moment of my career was getting to play my freshman season with my sister,” she says with pride.
From beating tough opponents like Noble to representing Duncan with integrity, Delayna carries her faith and dedication wherever she plays.
“I’m proud to wear a jersey that represents my high school and my community,” she says. “It means a lot to me to make sure I represent both well.”
